"The Piano" starts with a loud “BANG”: a grand piano slips off a truck, the piano keys fly around and end up scattered across the street. The piano is broken, but the black and white keys now become the start of something entirely new. Sven Völker views the keys as play materials and transforms them repeatedly into – sometimes very loud and sometimes very quiet – animals. Many double-page spreads are filled with fantastic, bold graphics and matching onomatopoeia until, in the end, sleeping penguins gradually line up. A keyboard is formed, and you can hear a small, soft, and happy “pling.”
